Raumwelten Festival, Ludwigsburg, Germany 2021.
Interspecies Ensemble is a collaboration between Irish musician Míchéal Keating, German singer and performance artist Elisabeth Anna Maria Kaiser and animator and video artist Felicia Bergström. Together they created a multimedia installation and a performance that was shown at the festival Raumwelten in Ludwigsburg, Germany, in November 2021.
The performance is improvised with a few key ideas and unfolds differently each time. In the centre of the installation hangs a microphone that captures all the sounds, which are processed through MaxPatch and played and modified live by Míchéal Keating. A Midi controller, connected to a computer, allows the projected animations to be controlled and altered directly from within the installation while the performance is in progress. In this way, the projected image can also be played along with as an instrument, either confirming, supporting or questioning what else is happening. Everything and everyone interacts with each other and is affected by what the other does.
The installation consists of about 90m2 of holes in paper with animations projected onto them. The idea of the installation was to create an intimate space, something like a nest or a cocoon for us to perform in. The shape is inspired by the plant Tillandsia Usneoides, which is also part of the performance. The semi-transparent paper used in the installation catches the light in a special way. Hanging loosely over tree branches attached to the ceiling, the paper is in constant, gentle motion. The projections are not only seen on the paper but are passed through the holes so that the light, shapes and colours are scattered around the room, over the performers and the audience. This creates a constantly changing interplay of light, shadow, movement and colour. The performance happened once a day during the festival. Visitors who came at other times had the opportunity to watch a recorded performance inside the installation.
