KRABAT
FAMILY OPERA
Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau in co-production with Lausitz Festival, Göritz, Germany.
The Sorbian Lowlands in 1642. War is raging in Europe, a bloody war that historians would later call the Thirty Years' War. The miller is in a bind. He can hardly find any journeymen. The fighting has claimed the lives of too many young men. Others have died of hunger or disease or fled their homeland. But the miller urgently needs new assistants, for he has made a pact with Smjertnica, the goddess of death: every year at Easter, he must sacrifice one of his young apprentices to her, on condition that he always has twelve miller's boys working for him. If he fails to do so, he forfeits his life and must die.
He draws hope from dark magic. When he discovers a chapter in his spell book that describes how a mill wheel can become a time machine, he tries out the black magic and finds Krabat, a boy from the future. He lures him to the mill, where Krabat not only has to work, but is soon to become the miller's successor. But Krabat sees through the miller's schemes and confronts him with courage and cunning.
